The Philodemic Society reaches out to the Washington, D.C. community primarily through the Urban Debate League. Many of our members currently volunteer through this organization to teach D.C. students debate. The Society’s relationship with the Urban Debate League was founded on the idea of sharing the Society’s passion and knowledge for debate with others, an endeavor that the Society continues to pursue in all aspects.
In the Philodemic Room, the Philodemic Society not only invites students, but also all members of the community to attend our Thursday night debates in Healy 108. Any community member who is interested in visiting the society or speaking at a debate is welcome to attend.
In the past, we have had community members attend debates relevant to the groups or causes they represent and have also had community members attend simply to hear young members of society debate relevant issues.
Further, each year, we invite prestigious members of the community to act as judges at our Annual Richard T. Merrick Debate, the culmination of the society’s school year. Below you will find tweets from last year’s judges :
